Professor Jala Makhzoumi

The MArch Programme at the Salford Laboratory of Architecture (S-LAB) and MLA programme at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) are delighted to co-host distinguished guest, Professor Jala Makhzoumi, an international scholar and esteemed landscape architecture and ecosystem management educator. Professor Makhzoumi will deliver a public talk on Tuesday, 16 April, at 5:30, preceded by an interdisciplinary postgraduate symposium at 2:30 open to students from the Salford MArch, MSA MLA and MArch (Infrastructure Atelier), and Salford Geography and Town Planning programmes.

In her research and practice, Jala pioneers a holistic approach that mediates community needs with ecosystem health, biodiversity protection, and heritage conservation. Her professional expertise includes sustainable urban greening, post-disaster recovery, and landscape heritage conservation, grounded in her research on the Right to Landscape, ecological landscape associations, and site-specific practices in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions.

 

Jala received the 2019 European Council of Landscape Architecture Schools (ECLAS) Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2021 Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe Award for her outstanding contribution to education and practice. She serves as Vice President for the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) and Acting President for IFLA Middle East. She co-founded the consultancy UNIT44 and is an adjunct landscape architecture professor at the American University of Beirut.
